Starting at 11am on Wednesday 2nd October Arc Sport legend Craig Davis started walking. His aim was to walk continuously around the 410m Village Green running track to raise funds and awareness for Child Life & Music Therapy at Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation. Doing the math it looked like 288 laps of the blue lanes through day and night.
The self-titled, self-styled challenge was Craig's brain child as he wanted a challenge befitting of the challenges faced by children in hospital every day. To top it all off, the walk started on a milestone birthday - so naturally celebrations went well into the night. At times Craig was accompanied by his son Tyler, colleagues, and friends. Despite the weather turning sour overnight, Craig was gritty and determined and continued to lap the oval.
Craig was modest in his reflection and said
On Tuesday 1st October, I was the helper - raising nearly $25,000. On Thursday 3rd October, I was the helped - as friends and family supported me in finishing off my 24 hour effort."
Student and Community Engagement Coordinator Katrina Pincaro who leads the Phil' program was grateful for Craig's efforts
Seeing Craig do this challenge this year is so inspiring to show that when it comes to philanthropy, it's not just individual effort but is strengthened by the power of community. There were so many people walking with him at every hour but also so many different pockets of people that donated. He brought the SCHF to the forefront to all these different communities through his decision to do this walk.
Craig’s fundraising has got Phil' well on it's way to acheiving their overall fundraising goal for this year. It also exemplifies Phil’s goal to embed a philanthropic spirit into the university landscape and unite the UNSW community behind one cause.
