Arc PGC Supervisor of the Year Awards 

The Postgraduate Council (PGC) is proud to host its inaugural PGC Supervisor of the Year Awards, held in conjunction with Graduate Research School.  

The 2021 awards will celebrate Research supervisors that have overcome challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to continue engaging, developing and supporting their research team. 

The PGC and Graduate Research School will present awards to successful applicants on the 28th of October 2021. All awardees will be featured on the Arc Newsletter and PGC Website. Nominations close 5pm the 27th of September. 

 

Awards 

The Supervisor Awards will acknowledge excellence in research, and leadership skills in mentoring, promoting healthy work-life balance and building a supportive research environment. Outstanding Award applications will evidence all answers with multiple detailed examples.


The award consists of three categories: 

  • Nominees Award - earned by all applicants. Acknowledged on Arc PGC website.

  • Supervisor Award - earned by the top 50% of applicants. Showcased during live event and acknowledged on Arc PGC website.

  • Outstanding Supervisor Award – earned by the top 10% of applicants. Showcased during live event and headshot with blurb published on Arc PGC website.

 

Eligibility 

  • Any supervisor or co-supervisor of a UNSW HDR student in 2020 or 2021 may be nominated. 

  • Only individual supervisors may be nominated and not groups or panels of supervisors.

  • Each supervisor must be nominated by a currently enrolled HDR student, including those that await their official conferral. 

  • Each student may only nominate a single supervisor. 

  • Elected members of the 2020 PGC are ineligible. 


Application Questions

  1. Describe the nominees’ professional achievements and contributions in their field during the COVID-19 pandemic. For examples, publications, conferences and advising on committees or boards (100-150 words). 
  2. Describe newer approaches the nominee has used to provide a supportive research environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, organising weekly virtual meetings that rotates speakers and encourages open discussion (100-150 words).  
  3. Describe how the nominee has promoted a healthy work-life balance for their research team, as they transition into hybrid or non-campus work. For example, promoting mental wellbeing extra-curricular activities (100-150 words). 
  4. Describe how the nominee has demonstrated excellence in mentorship and encouraged individuals within their team to pursue extra-circular personal and professional development. For example, encouraging a newer team member to undertake a public speak course to develop their presentation skills (100-150 words). 
  5. Provide a sentence long award title to be read during the award presentation. Include the nominees' most significant contribution for receiving this award. For example, “Professor Jean deserves to be honoured for ensuring her research teams wellbeing by promoting routine mental health maintenance during the lockdowns”. 

 

Judging Panel

  • A three person judging panel will assess all nominations. 
  • The judging panel will consist of a PGC officer, a previous outstanding category awardee and a UNSW academic.


Submission Instructions 

  • Nominee applications are to be submitted via the Supervisor of the Year Microsoft form

  • All requested information is to be supplied via the Microsoft form, including supporting documents.
