LGBTIQA+ Inclusion in Sport

Sport has a range of physical, mental and social benefits that can contribute to positive health and mental wellbeing for individuals. Unfortunately however, due to a negative culture of discrimination and harrassment toward LGBTIQA+ individuals, sport can often be an uncomfortable space for many people. Arc Sport have created this area of our resource page to promote inclusivity and safety for people who identify within the Queer comunity. This space can also be used for individuals and clubs to educate themselves on more inclusive practices, and to help celebrate diversity & LGTBIQA+ communities. 

Policies & Guidelines

  1. Guidance for Transgender Inclusion in Domestic Sport | Information to utilise and reflect on the practices used within sporting communities for inclusion of Transgender individuals.
  2. A language guide: Trans and gender diverse inclusion, ACON Health | Language guide produced by ACON for understanding pronouns and respectful communication with trans and gender diverse people.
  3. Guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport | These Guidelines have been developed by the Australian Human Rights Commission (the Commission) to provide guidance to sporting organisations on promoting the inclusion and participation of transgender and gender diverse people in sport.
  4. Anti-Homophobia & Inclusion Framework For Australian Sports | This Anti-homophobia & Inclusion Framework sets out a structure for the development of anti-homophobia & inclusion policies to be adopted by five peak sports bodies; the Australian Rugby Union, Australian Football League, National Rugby League, Football Federation Australia and Cricket Australia.

Tool Kits & Training

  1. ACON Pride Training | Various training that is available for individual's to develop their competency surrounding LGBTIQA+ communities. The range of courses includes free and paid learning options. 
  2. Creating an LGBTI+ Inclusive Club | A free, interactive online training course suitable for coaches, administrators, officials, players and volunteers aiming to educate community sport members on inclusion for LGBTQIA+ individuals
  3. Resources Hub | A number of resources for the sports community to better support LGBTI+ inclusion.

University Services

  1. UNSW Psychology and Wellness | A range of support services provided by the University
  2. Queer Collective | Queer Officers are Student Representative Council representatives who advocate for the rights of LGBTIQ+ students on campus and organise events. These officers are elected by students and look after the Queer Collective 
  3. Ally@UNSW | The Ally@UNSW network aims to ensure UNSW is a safe and welcoming place for all LGBTIQ+ students and staff.
