Intimations

Lisa Myeong-Joo | Monika Cvitanovic Zaper | Sophie Lane

Exhibition: 10.02.21- 20.02.21

Intimations holds space for the ongoing shifting and transformative nature of our interpersonal relationships. It acknowledges the subtle dialogues between people and places, between the artists and their late grandmothers and mothers, the emotionally unavailable, lost friends and lovers. These intimations traverse various distances in time and space to occupy passages for non-normative ways of communicating. A combination of textile, painting, drawing, video and installation engage in slow, cathartic and meditative methodologies, allowing the artists access to personal and sensitive content while participating in integral acts of self care. These practices foster a sense of introspection where the gesture of slowness allows for a reflexive observation of the self, everyday life and the people within it.

Artist Profiles

Lisa continues her dialogue with her late mother as an exploration into the inconclusive process of grief through the experience of being at once an artist and daughter. The work presents a non-normative response to all encompassing grief, animated by personal narrative to unpack the often ambiguous feelings associated with death. By doing so, she aims to bring awareness that mourning demands time, labour and creativity that can and should be shared.

Monika Cvitanovic Zaper dialogues with her female ancestors and their craft practices by repurposing several pillowcases over a period of one year. While the paint is used expressively to address the memories of the artist’s upbringing, the needlework is applied in a sloppy manner as a conscious rejection of established patriarchal values of perfection. While honouring the resourcefulness and resilience of the lineage of women, the work aims to challenge the persisting gendered hierarchy of art materials.

Sophie Lane

Sophie Lane

Sophie’s painting and drawing practice explores how art and language can be a tool of care towards both self and others. With diaristic writing as central to self care, Lane combines fragments of this writing with imagery to reflect on current and past relationships. She uses a continued daily practice of intensive letter writing to produce new sheets of blank, handmade paper, at once both revealing and concealing conversations unspoken.
