2023-2024 Tax Reporting Changes for Clubs

Why is This Happening

On 11 May 2021, the Australian Government announced changes to the administration of Not-For-Profit entities that self-assess as income tax exempt. This was announced as part of the 2021–22 Federal Budget.

This means that from the 2023-24 income year, non-charitable not-for-profits (NFP) with an active ABN need to lodge an annual return.

As new information and advice is received Arc Clubs will update this page.

What This Means for Clubs & Societies

Arc Clubs has been working diligently with the Australian Taxation Office, the Student Experience Network and our accountants to receive accurate and up-to-date advice on how these changes will affect Clubs at UNSW.

In doing so, we have categorised ALL Clubs into one of five categories. Each of these categories will require different steps to ensure compliance with the measures. From the 4th of July 2024, your Club Executive will have been sent an email titled "[IMPORTANT] Tax Reporting Changes for Arc Clubs" which includes the category and recommendations Arc Clubs believes your Club will best fit.

The five categories are:

  • Clubs that have an ABN that are registered with ACNC
  • Clubs that have an ABN that are not registered with ACNC
  • Clubs that have an ABN that cannot claim Income Tax Exemption
  • Clubs that do not have an ABN that cannot claim Income Tax Exemption
  • Clubs that do not have an ABN

Below you can find the advice we have received for each of these categories.

As the 2025 Reaffiliation Season draws closer, Arc Clubs is expected to experience a high volume of questions and concerns from our Clubs Community. We ask that during this time you are patient with us as we seek to ensure you receive the most accurate and up to date information.

We may not have the answers right away, but we will support you every step of the way.

Arc Clubs will be making a suite of additional changes to our Policy in 2024 and look forward to announcing those changes before the end of Term 2 2024.
