MEET: THE ART & DESIGN STUDENT COUNCIL

The Council is dedicated to helping enrich student life in all sorts of ways, from representation and advocacy on issues affecting the student body, to events and activities.

The Council is made up of UNSW Art & Design students dedicated to making sure your voice is heard on campus. Audrey Pfister chats to three of the superstar Student Council representatives below so you can E-meet them!

MAHN LION

Who are you on campus?

I’m the Equity Officer that sleeps in the bean bags.

Who are you off campus?

Still figuring that one out. But hopefully soon it will involve more Testosterone.

What's your favourite thing about campus?

The magpies that live on Selwyn street. They prefer worms, don’t mind carbs, and reluctantly accept fruit or veggies as gestures of friendship. Be kind to them - they’ll remember you.

What's your 2018 dreams, goals, and visions?

For A&D - a prayer room and and a unisex bathroom. For the world - I want to digest Vonnegut, Ursula K Le Guin and all of Gothic literature to start an Australian-bush-gothic-sarcastic-kindness cult. I just really feel like existential questions and compassions are best answered through hardcore sci-fi and death-sprites.

Fears and nightmares?

That I’ll never be good enough at anything. #takeyourmeds

Study tips & tricks?

Hydrate and get enough sleep. Be kind to yourself.

Let's meet!?

DM me, @mahnlion or if you see me in the wild, ruffle my hair.

LAURA PEACOCK

Who are you on campus?

A Jewellery, History and Sociology Student, the 2nd equity officer on the student council and a member of the Kudos Gallery Committee.

Who are you off campus?

Probably pretty similar except I write less emails (marginally).

What's your favourite thing on campus?

Definitely free lunch but I never get to have it anymore because I’m not around at the right time!

Favourite things off campus?

Having drinks with friends in Camperdown park in the afternoon and watching all the dogs.

What are your 2018 dreams, goals, and visions?

I think I need to be more of a legitimate adult in a lot of ways, so I would say they all involve things like taking more responsibility for myself and being a more active participant in my life. Specifically, I want to organise a solo show for myself, and work on being nicer to others and myself. Self-improvement 2018!

Fears and nightmares?

I think they’re super cool and interesting in every other way, but I freak out every time a moth or butterfly comes near me. It’s completely irrational I know but they move too erratically, and it terrifies me.

Study snacks, tips, or tricks?

I always have a cup of tea, unfortunately I don’t think there’s any tricks, you just gotta sit down and force yourself to work. But as someone with a really short attention span I think its also ok to have little breaks, just make sure they STAY little otherwise you’re going to end up 4 hours deep in a YouTube recommended video playlist wondering why you’re watching the history of how toys have affected American culture.

How can we meet Student Council IRL?

Come in to the Arc office! Someone should be around, or just keep an eye out for any of us around campus, we are always happy to talk to anyone about suggestions, ideas or just to chat.

LOC NGUYEN

Who are you on campus?

I’m the Kudos Gallery Intern and Representative Officer for the Student Council. I’m a media artist specialising in interactive media, video and sound, and I’m starting my honours year.

Who are you off campus?

One fabulous human being.

What's your favourite thing on campus?

I love the community and making friends with people from all sorts of artistic and design backgrounds.

Favourite things off campus?

Anywhere with yummy vego food.

What are your 2018 dreams, goals, and visions?

I’m excited to produce a new body of work that experiments with ideas and forms I haven’t worked with before. Hopefully it is something of worth for my honours.

Fears and nightmares?

My biggest fear is for the sour cream to run out before the sweet chilli when I’m eating a bowl of wedges.

Study tricks?

Different things work for different people but just remembering to do at least do something every day to contribute to your uni work. It could be 3 hours or 30minutes - but a little bit a day will always help.

How can we meet Student Council IRL?

You can see us at any of the weekly events we host, for example, Free Toast Fridays or you could shoot us an email.
